Italian media outlet TGCOM24 is reporting a member of the 2023 Frecce Tricolori has passed away in a fatal ultralight accident in Italy.

TGCOM24 reports that the accident which involved an Alpi Pioneer 300 occurred in Lusevera, part of the Udine province. The aircraft has taken off from Campoformido Airfield yesterday evening (29th April) but crashed into a wooded area near-by.

Two people were on board the aircraft involved with TGCOM24 naming Captain Alessio Ghersi as one of the victims. Ghersi was 34 and was a former Eurofighter Typhoon pilot. He was about to start his fifth season with Il Frecce Tricolori flying in the ‘Pony 5’ position. It is understood that the second victim was a relation of Ghersi.

The Chief of Staff for the Aeronautica Militare, General Luca Goretti, expressed his condolences to Captain Ghersi’s wife and children and announced that the traditional May 1st event in Rivolto (Udine) for the opening of the aerobatic season has been cancelled.
