The European Airshow Council and International Sanicole Airshow are proud to announce that during this year’s International Council of Air Shows Convention, Gilbert Buekenberghs was honoured with the Sword of Excellence. The Sword of Excellence has been synonymous with air show excellence and recognises outstanding service and personal contributions to the air show industry. It is internationally considered to be the single highest honor an individual air show professional can receive.

Mr Buekenberghs is the founder of the internationally acclaimed Sanicole Airshow in Belgium that celebrated its 40th edition in 2017. He is also a founding member and the chairman of the European Airshow Council.
The Sword of Excellence award was created in 1981 to honour the highest levels of achievement in the air show business and to recognise the nominees’ commitment to improving and contributing not just to their own air show businesses, but to the entire air show industry.
Mr Buekenberghs is the first European to win this prestigious award. He is acknowledged for his leadership in developing the European Airshow Council into a strong and impactful association that has played a critical role in professionalizing the European airshow industry, to make European airshows better for spectators and safer for participants.
